29/08/2005 - Mat Dominates In Scotland With Two Wins
Henley-in-Arden's Mat Jackson crushed the opposition to easily win the latest two rounds of the Smartnav SEAT Cupra Championship at the Knockhill circuit in Scotland yesterday.
Mat was fastest in official testing held in dry conditions on Friday and on Saturday qualified on pole position for the first of the two races. For race two, he qualified second on the grid.
Sunday's two races were held in pouring rain. In race one, Mat, in his Whale Tankers-backed SEAT Leon Cupra simply drove away from the rest of the field to win by more than six seconds. He also set the race's fastest lap time for a bonus point. In race two, he held second position into the first corner but by the next bend he was into the lead and this time romped home to win by more than nine seconds.
Indeed, by the end of the first lap he had opened up such a huge gap to the field the circuit commentator was heard to say "I think Mat Jackson could lap the entire field at this rate. His lead after just one lap is enormous." Mat again set the race's fastest lap.
It was his third win in a row and Mat has now moved up to second in the points standings and in total has six race victories, the same number as championship leader Tom Boardman. The gap to Boardman that Mat is now aiming to make up in the season's final four races is 46 points.
"The weekend couldn't have been more perfect. Two wins, two fastest laps and I'm up to second in the championship," says Mat, who is also an official driver for leading motor sport radio show Tin Top Tuesday. "I've never driven the SEAT Leon Cupra in the rain before, but I was amazed at how much grip I felt from the car in what were really bad conditions. The car remained very responsive and it always felt safe to push."
Mat adds: "It's Silverstone next and then Brands Hatch and I'm going to both those circuits with the aim of winning all four races. My car feels fantastic to drive and I'm on top of my game. The gap to Boardman is quite large, but bear in mind how many retirements I've had this year compared to him. It's up to him whether he wins or loses it."
Mat's two Silverstone races will be on the weekend of 17-18 September, while the Brands Hatch finale is on 1-2 October.
